A very personal book written by a person in search of a decent cup of tea. "We can survive functional illiteracy or shattered windows of vulnerability, but not the demise of The Decent Cup of Tea." Contains the usual facts, history etc, but should be read because of the authors very boldly stated opinions.

Price: $12.95
Nanette Blanchard (nanetteb@csn.org) writes (950504):
This new book is a reprint of the 1903 book, THE LITTLE TEA BOOK, by NY journalist Arthur Gray. It is a small book but this updated edition includes some wonderful prints of vintage tea labels, old china and silver patterns, and line drawings. The book itself is an homage to tea and includes quotes, poems, info about tea and tea ceremonies around the world. It would make a nice gift for another tea-lover. Here's a sample:
"Tea is certainly as much of a social drink as coffee, and more domestic, for the reason that the teacup hours are the family hours. As these are the hours when the sexes are thrown together, and as most of the poetry and philosophy of tea drinking teem with female virtues, vanities and whimsicalities, the inference is that, without women, tea would be nothing; and without tea, women would be stale, flat, and uninteresting. With them it is a polite, purring, soft, gentle, kind, sympathetic, delicious beverage."
And one of the quotes from the book: "Tea tempers the spirits and harmonizes the mind, dispels lassitude and relieves fatigue, awakens thought and prevents drowsiness, lightens or refreshes the body, and clears the perceptive faculties." CONFUCIOUS

The book on Chinese tea for western people. Long descriptions of the 50 most popular teas in China, plus history, maps, charts, tables, lists of names in different languages. It has updated mail order lists. Some export statistics on China tea can be found on page xv.

Art, Tea, and Industry: Masuda Takashi and the Mitsui Circle.
by C.M. Guth.
Princeton University Press (1993)

Cloth: 248 pages. 0-691-03206-8 $29.95
Cloth in UK: L23.00; in Europe: $34.50
In this illustrated book Christine Guth examines the intimate relationship between art collecting, the tea ceremony, and business through the activities of Masuda Takashi (1848-1938), the highly charismatic director of the Mitsui conglomerate whose opulent life and passionate pursuit of art continue to influence new generations of aspiring business magnates in Japan. An elaborate social ritual in which the worlds of business and art collecting intersected, the tea ceremony guided Masuda in amassing the finest collection of Sino-Japanese art in the early Japanese industrial era. Guth's exploration of his aesthetic ideas deepens our understanding of not only the formation of the canon of Japanese art but also the role of art in the ideology of early modern Japan.
At a time when there were few art museums in Japan and Japanese art was becoming internationally known, Masuda's tea gatherings functioned as a salon where his colleagues, other collectors, and art dealers could view, discuss, and handle works of art. Under his influence, art collecting and mastery of the tea ceremony became integral parts of the business training and activities of Mitsui executives. Masuda's collection was rich in calligraphy, ink painting, lacquer, and ceramics, but it was especially noted for its Buddhist painting and sculpture. These works, which were dispersed after World War II, are now in museums and private collections throughout Japan and the United States.
Christine M. E. Guth received her Ph.D. in Fine Arts from Harvard University. She is the author of Shinzo: Hachiman Imagery and Its Development (Harvard) and coauthor, with Julia Meech, of Japanese Prints from the Matsukata Collection (Rutgers).

For those interested in learning about tea and its history, this is a nice comprehensive hard cover guide. In the back, there is a Connoisseur's Guide, listing recipes, tea rooms, tea shops, and tea statistics. Gorgeously photographed and printed tea table book. A bit expensive ($45) but worth it as an indulgence. Not only is it gorgeous, but it has a lot of really useful and up to date information. Has mail order addresses and tea houses for all over Europe. I truly recommend this book for anyone who can afford it.

The Book of Tea and Herbs
by No apparent author, "A Practical Guide from the Ministry of Information."
The Cole Group, 1993. $12.00.

An interesting little book of history, tea sayings and other miscellaneous info. It has a pronunciation guide to the Chinese teas, which I appreciated. Also has a decent section on herbs, their history, lore and uses. Note: this book is available by mail order from the company, The Republic of Tea. However, I ordered it from my friendly neighborhood bookstore. They got it in with no problem and I didn't have to pay any shipping costs.

The Republic of Tea, Letters to a Young Zentrepreneur
by No apparent author

For a look at the creation of the Republic read 'The Republic of Tea, Letters to a Young Zentrepreneur'. It documents the creation of this interesting company through faxes between Mel and Patricia Ziegler, and Bill Rosenzweig about tea and the formation of a successful tea company. The motivations for forming a business vary, and change. I got my copy at the library.

A "pretty" book, designed more for looks than for depth or breadth. Decent price, though. Nice Photography and print job. the information is OK but not of much depth. No mail order info. Over half the book is recipes (some for sweet and savory items to serve at Tea and some interesting recipes using tea as an ingredient.

The Tea Lover's Treasury
by James Norwood Pratt
Berkeley, CA: 101 Productions, 1982.

[Doubtless available from J.N. Pratt Tea Luxuries ... see vendor list] The book has a huge section of "tea tales," fantastic historical anecdotes about tea and the tea trade; an extensive guide to the types of teas, with discussions of taste, production, and so on; and smaller sections on tea equipage, tea manners, the tea trade, and the technical aspects on tea production. The writing is brilliant. One of my two favorite and most useful tea books. It discusses tea tales, history and tea things generally and has a good description of teas of the world.
